Many modern systems now come with communication interfaces to enhance the overall connectivity of a system design, but these interfaces can result in new challenges for design engineers. Taking Ethernet to the edge, industrial SPE enables connected edge nodes and distributed processing in industrial designs, enabling data to move over Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol anywhere you need it to go.

IO-Link is a digital communication protocol used in industrial automation for data communicated between sensors, actuators and controllers. It enables reliable and efficient communication in various industrial applications including assembly lines, robotics and packaging.

IO-Link communication in industrial automation provides numerous advantages, including real-time data and power transmission with transfer speeds as high as 230.4Kbps; simplified installation and configuration; and enhanced diagnostics such as device status, configuration and error messaging.

Microcontrollers (MCUs) with integrated real-time peripherals and math accelerators, programmable real-time processors, configurable logic blocks, and integrated motor control-specific peripherals enable <1µs current loops; the implementation of low-latency and low-jitter communication; and accurate sensing that removes the need for an external field-programmable gate array.
